Transformation

From a moving, uneven bank to a stable concrete sleeper wall holding the soil in place.

Project Brief

This Palm Cove property had ground movement and uneven levels that made the outdoor space hard to use. The bank behind an existing block wall needed holding back properly. We were asked to build a concrete sleeper retaining wall to fix the levels and stabilise the ground.

We started with site preparation and excavation. Given the coastal conditions, we gave careful thought to drainage, footing depth and long-term durability before anything went in the ground. The early stage shows the excavated trench running alongside the existing block wall, with the first steel post set and a single concrete sleeper dropped into place.

From there we worked the footing line along the block wall. A CAT excavator graded the adjacent ground and prepared the trench for the rest of the posts. The steel H-section posts went in one by one, spaced to take the sleeper panels between them.

With the posts set, we installed the reinforced concrete sleeper panels between them. It is a strong, low-maintenance wall built to handle the soil pressure and suit the site levels. The wall was engineered for long-term structural performance in the local climate.

The finished concrete sleeper wall now holds back the graded soil bank behind it, with the steel posts locked in and the sleepers seated between them. The area that was moving is stable, and the outdoor space is more usable with a clean, modern finish.

What was included

  • Site preparation and excavation to address ground movement and uneven levels
  • Trench and footing line set alongside the existing block wall
  • Drainage, footing depth and durability considered for coastal conditions
  • Steel H-section posts set into the footing line
  • Reinforced concrete sleeper panels installed between the posts
  • Soil graded and stabilised behind the finished wall

Key Features

Steel posts and sleeper panels

Steel H-section posts set along the footing line with concrete sleeper panels seated between them.

Built for the site

The wall was engineered to suit the existing site levels and hold back the graded soil bank.

Coastal conditions

Drainage, footing depth and durability were all considered before construction started for the local climate.

The Result

The completed concrete sleeper retaining wall holds back the graded soil behind it and has settled the ground movement on the site. The steel posts are locked in with the sleepers seated between them, next to the existing block wall. The outdoor space is more usable and has a clean, modern finish.
