Earthworks, Parking Area and Retaining Wall in Yorkeys Knob

The front of this Yorkeys Knob property was overgrown and hard to use. Dense vegetation crowded the narrow concrete driveway, and the existing painted stone retaining wall and steps were half buried in the garden. There was not much room to park or get in and out. Our earthworks job here started with clearing all of that back.

Once the vegetation was gone, we brought in a skid steer loader to reshape the ground. We cut into the soil bank on one side to open up the frontage and widen the access area. You can see the exposed cut soil in the mid-works photos, with the loader parked to the side. The ground was graded and levelled before we started on the surface.

To stabilise the new parking and access area we laid black geotextile fabric across the prepared ground, then topped it with crushed rock. The fabric sits under the gravel to keep the surfaces stable and stop the rock working into the soil. Around the edge of the concrete driveway you can see the fabric-and-gravel line where the two meet.

At the rear we carried out more earthmoving to reshape the yard into a flat, usable backyard. To hold the new levels we built a concrete sleeper retaining wall. The finished wall has crushed rock along its base and backfilled soil behind it, so the ground stays put and the finish is clean and durable.

Back at the front, the finished view shows the graded driveway, the cleared frontage and the original stone steps now sitting clear of the garden. It's straightforward earthworks, but it opens the block right up.
